49ers worked out linebacker Desmond Bishop

The 49ers are looking at an option for some linebacker reserve depth. We take a look at the news about Desmond Bishop's visit.

The San Francisco 49ers were busy on Monday getting a couple players into the facility. We learned yesterday that they brought in rugby player Jarryd Hayne in for a visit. Additional, word later got out fro Howard Balzer and Aaron Wilson that the team worked out linebacker Desmond Bishop. The former Cal product has spent time with the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals.

Bishop has a variety of experience, including both as an inside and outside linebacker. He last played with the Arizona Cardinals in this past preseason. Bruce Arians used him primarily as an inside guy, but he maintains some versatility. For the 49ers, this could mean one of two things. One is that they know NaVorro Bowman is going to stay on the injury list, and so they just want another option to add to the roster. The other is that Bishop can play outside, and maybe the team is prepared to move on from Ahmad Brooks sooner rather than later.

The latter seems a little unlikely to me at this point, but given the direction this season seems to be headed, I suppose anything is possible. My guess though is the team is considering an option for some inside depth.
