Blaine Gabbert traded to 49ers for 6th round pick, per Adam Schefter

The 49ers have reportedly acquired Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert for a sixth round pick. We break down what it means.

Well, the new league year just got interesting. An hour after we heard the San Francisco 49ers had signed Antoine Bethea to a 4-year contract, we have a second transaction being reported by Adam Schefter. According to Schefter, the 49ers have traded a 6th round draft pick for Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

This would mark the second straight season the 49ers have dealt a Day 3 draft pick for a quarterback that disappointed in his last stop. Last year the team dealt a pair of picks for Browns QB Colt McCoy, and this year, the team is adding former first round pick Blaine Gabbert.

Gabbert was the tenth overall pick of the 2011 draft, going 26 spots before the 49ers moved up to acquire Colin Kaepernick. The 49ers visited Missouri's Pro Day back in 2011, but it turned out to be a chance to check out Aldon Smith. Maybe Jim Harbaugh saw something he liked in Gabbert from way back when. Although Trent Baalke handles most of the offseason maneuvering, Coach Harbaugh reportedly has a lot of sway when it comes to quarterbacks. This would likely be mostly a Harbaugh move.

This move is a basic flier on a guy I'd imagine Jim Harbaugh and Geep Chryst hope they can resuscitate into a decent backup. And who knows, maybe he shows some things in the preseason and regular season mop-up duty, and the 49ers flip him for a higher pick. This is a weak draft class for quarterbacks, so why not grab someone young with some NFL experience?
