It looks like Eric Wright's stay with the 49ers will last at least one more year. The 49ers free agent cornerback tweeted out this picture on Instagram with this caption:
"...The dream of Eric Wright that's what I'm giving you..." The Game #LetsTryThisAgain #BeGratefulForYourOpportunities #QuestForSix #ImJustAKidFromHuntersPoint #PeaceAndBlessings
Someone made a good joke on Twitter about Wright pulling a Costanza and just showing up to work every day. It'd be pretty funny, but all reports indicate it is legit.
Wright has been very clear in stating he wanted to stick with the 49ers for another year. He was born in San Francisco, and has posted pictures on Instagram featuring himself in 49ers gear, even when he was not with the 49ers. The team attempted to trade for him last summer, but he "failed a physical" and the trade was rescinded. He later signed with the 49ers as a free agent at the start of training camp. He was placed on the NFI list for undisclosed personal reasons.
Once Wright came off the NFI list, he replaced Perrish Cox on the roster. He got some chances as the dime back, and even some nickel time, but an injury the week of the Packers playoff game shut down his chances at an extended playoff appearance. He got some special teams snaps, but otherwise it was a fairly disappointing end to the season.
Wright should be fully healthy and ready to go this offseason. The 49ers have released Carlos Rogers, and Tarell Brown could depart in free agency. That opens the door for Wright, but I also imagine the team will add at least one cornerback in the draft. My guess is Wright's deal is not going to be much more than the veteran minimum, but we'll wait and see.
