The San Francisco 49ers didn't mess around on the first day of free agency. They signed a safety and maybe thought about signing a running back. There was a trade, and then another trade. They even kept a couple of their own.
One would gather that means and abundance of emails were sent between Jim Harbaugh and Trent Baalke on the day.
The rest of the division didn't sit around and watch, however. Actually, that's not true. The St. Louis Rams did sit around and watch. But the Seahawks and Cardinals didn't!
Here's a recap of the goings on around the division on a wild first day of grown men shopping for multi-million dollar things.
Arizona Cardinals
Additions and Interest:
- The Cardinals snagged LT Jared Veldheer from the Oakland Raiders. ESPN.com's Josh Weinfuss has an amusing breakdown of the Card's historical woes in regards to protecting their quarterbacks' blind side. Of course, as he notes, Veldheer is a pretty nice upgrade for them. That's less amusing for us.
Roster Losses:
- ILB Karlos Dansby split town, joining former 49ers safety Donte Whitner in Cleveland with the Browns.
- WR Andre Roberts joins the Washington football team, likely as a starter opposite Pierre Garcon.
St. Louis Rams
Additions and Interest:
- This is where things about the Rams adding or showing interest in players would be listed, in bullet form, had they added or shown interest in even a single player.
- This is not the thread.
Roster Losses:
- The Raiders did Raiderly* things and signed Rodger Saffold away from the Rams, inking him to a five-year pact after watching their own Jared Veldheer head to Arizona on a cheaper deal.
- The team announced the release of CB Cortland Finnegan.
* Yes, that is a word.
Seattle Seahawks
Additions and Interest:
- Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley will visit the defending Super Bowl champions tomorrow.
- They are also apparently one of two teams -- the other being the Chicago Bears -- who are in on Minnesota Vikings DE Jared Allen. At this point, it feels like the Hawks are determined to replace Chris Clemons to save some cap space.
- One of the Dallas Cowboys cap cuts was interior defensive lineman Jason Hatcher. Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times tweeted the Seahawks will be hosting him for a visit. The other name in that tweet -- Taylor Price -- is not the awesome 49ers staff reporter, but rater the not-awesome wide receiver formerly of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Roster Losses:
- The Seahawks lost 27-year-old breakout interior lineman Clinton McDonald to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was quote the tag-team partner inside with Brandon Mebane, racking up 5 1/2 sacks. He gets a pretty massive pay raise, and the Hawks lose some of their depth.
- Backup OLB O'Brien Schofield goes to the New York Giants.
