Golden Nuggets: The NFL wanted a May draft, and now we get to waaaaaaiiiiittttt for it

San Francisco 49ers links for Friday, March 28, 2014.

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

We're back for a later in the morning version of today's Golden Nuggets, with me as your special guest-host! It's a relatively quiet time in 49ers land now that the owners' meetings are a wrap. Normally we'd now be less than a month until the NFL Draft. Instead, we've got a couple weeks past that to wait. The NFL moved the draft to May, claiming there was a conflicting event they couldn't move. That show (Rockettes or something) was subsequently cancelled because it was not ready to start.

That does happen from time-to-time, but the general belief is the NFL was looking for an excuse for a permanent move to May. The idea is that the NFL wants to spread out their events a little more. Before this year, May through late July was a relative dead period. You had the workout program in May, OTAs in June, but it was still relatively quiet. Since they already have the schedule release announcement in April, moving the draft to May now gives them a big event in that month. Now, you have schedule in April, draft in May, OTAs in June, and then training camp in July. Well played, NFL, well played.
