NFL free agency is less than a week away, which means mock drafts will likely start to see some changes. Some team needs will change, and even if it's just a few first round team needs, it can create all sorts of havoc with mock drafts.
I've updated the Niners Nation mock draft database for now, and we have a couple changes of note. The most notable is that a safety has worked his way into the mix. Previously, the picks included cornerbacks, wide receivers and defensive linemen. This time around, strong safety Jimmie Ward was added to the mix by CBS Sports' Pete Prisco. While Prisco can be a pain in the butt, this is an interesting pick. If Donte Whitner signs a new deal with the team it goes away, but if Whitner leaves in free agency, the 49ers will have to aim high on their safety board.
It's also interesting to note that wide receiver climbed back on top as the most picked position. Many of these mock drafts were last updated before Anquan Boldin signed his new contract with the 49ers. It will be interesting to see if any of them adjust accordingly when they next update. Wide receiver remains a position of need in the bigger picture, but with Anquan Boldin, Michael Crabtree and Quinton Patton all back in 2014, does the team spend a pick on a short-term luxury? I realize depth is important, and there are still long-term questions, but can the team justify a first round wide receiver right now?
