NFL free agency gets started this weekend with the negotiation period, and players will be able to sign with new teams starting next Tuesday. In the meantime, teams can still re-sign their free agents, as we saw earlier this week when the San Francisco 49ers signed wide receiver Anquan Boldin to a two year contract.
For now, here is an updated depth chart following the Boldin deal. It's the only notable change since this late January look, but that will change by the time free agency starts, even without outside names. The 49ers will extend a tender to exclusive rights free agent Michael Wilhoite, and he will re-sign at least for that tender, assuming they don't work out a long-term deal. Just a reminder that an exclusive rights free agent is free only in the sense that he can choose to either play for the 49ers, or not play football. The 49ers could elect not to tender him, but they will not do that.
I also swapped Joe Looney and Adam Snyder at left and right guard. Modesto Matt mentioned swapping them during our discussion of the interior line depth chart after Daniel Kilgore signed his contract extension. Someone else pointed out that Snyder was already in at left guard when Looney went in, but since Snyder went in at LG first, I figured why not just swap them.
I still think Adam Snyder is on the roster bubble heading into camp. I think it's strong bubble, but if Joe Looney shows he can handle that interior line work, and one of Luke Marquardt or Carter Bykowski can handle the swing tackle work, Snyder could be on the outs for salary cap purposes. Of course, even if Looney is able to handle the interior work, Marquardt and Bykowski have a lot to prove to supplant a veteran like Snyder. But I think it's something worth at least keeping on our radar this offseason.
Here is the full depth chart, along with the 49ers various free agents.
