The 2014 NFL Draft is now four weeks away, and media momentum is moving toward cornerback as the position of choice for the 49ers in the first round. In the latest version of the Niners Nation 2014 NFL mock draft database, 15 of the 28 mocks go with a cornerback. Of the remaining 13, seven go wide receiver, five go defensive tackle, and one has the 49ers trading out of the first round.
In sorting through the mock, one name jumped out at me. NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah put together a mock on April 9 in which he has the 49ers selecting cornerback Darqueze Dennard. Prior to Dennard, Jeremiah has three cornerbacks drafted prior to Dennard: Justin Gilbert, Bradley Roby and Kyle Fuller.
There has been a little bit of chatter among draft media about Dennard, with some suggesting he might slip. It's all just chatter without any real backing at this point. But it's always interesting to ponder who might slip in the actual draft. The 49ers saw Michael Crabtree slip to them thanks to Al Davis' fascination with straight line speed. The 49ers may be far down the first round, but if a player slips into those middle picks, they are ready to pounce.
At this point, who do you see as candidates to potentially slide down the first round into the 49ers range that we might currently be seeing as a higher pick? It's a bit of a guessing game, but if you have any predictions, let us know why as well.
