Monday morning, I mentioned that the San Francisco 49ers were hosting a variety of NFL Draft prospects during the day. In discussing them, I mentioned a plan to come up with a complete rundown of all prospects that have visited with or met with the 49ers. Or at least the ones we know of, since I'm sure some will remain a secret.
In order to do this, I figured I'd spend this week providing some individual updates from news I missed that came around over the last couple months. One such piece of news was reported last Wednesday by Eric Branch. LSU wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. said in a radio interview that he spent some time with the 49ers at the LSU Pro Day last week. The 49ers had a scout on hand, and it would seem that scout had a chance to chat with Beckham.
The 49ers have a need at wide receiver, but will they go first round to fill that need? Beckham seems like a guy who probably will not slip to the second round, but when it comes to the draft, anything is possible. If the 49ers went cornerback in the first and Beckham slipped into the second, I could see the 49ers conceivably making a move for him. They have the draft assets to move up in any round, and with two second round picks, it's not nearly as huge a jump.
Or, if the 49ers are willing to wait on cornerback, maybe they go wide receiver in the first, or trade down to the top of the second if they think they can get the right guy. Given the depth of the wide receiver and cornerback classes, it's difficult to figure out how the 49ers play it.
Here's a quick rundown of some of Beckham's pertinent measurements from the Combine:
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 198 lbs
Arm length: 32 3/4"
40-time: 4.43
Bench Press: 7
Vertical: 38 1/2"
Broad: 10'02"
20-yard shuttle:3.94
3-cone drill: 6.69
