2014 NN community mock draft: With the 16th pick, the Dallas Cowboys select ...

The 2014 Niners Nation NFL mock draft is off and running. We move on to the Dallas Cowboys, courtesy of user Mira Loma Maulers.

We're back for the 16th pick of the 2014 Niners Nation Community Mock Draft. You can see previous picks below in the draft table. You can also follow the mock draft board through this story stream.

With the 16th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, Mira Loma Maulers and the Dallas Cowboys select Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M. Some of the alternates he considered included Louisville safety Calvin Prior, Florida State defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan, Notre Dame defensive tackle Louis Nix III, or a trade down. Here are his thoughts on the pick:

Apparently the NFL and ESPN have conspired to drop Johnny Manziel into the lap of Jerry Jones, and the Dallas Cowboys. Can you imagine this scenario? I shudder to think of a summer chock-full of Ed Werder at Cowboy's headquarters vignettes on Sportscenter.

The Cowboys are starved for defensive players. They had one of the worst defenses  in the NFL last year (432 point allowed, 7 games opponents scored 30 or more, averaged 415 yards surrendered per game, ext.... ), and they just lost Demarcus Ware. They have holes across the board on the defensive side of the ball. With all that being said, Manziel is not getting past 16.

The Cowboys have not drafted a QB since 2009 (Stephen Mcgee 4th round), and they haven't drafted a QB in the first round since Troy Aikman in 1989. Tony Romo is coming off of back surgery, and a 4 year string of disappointing seasons (6-10 and three 8-8 seasons). Stephen Jones (Jerry's son and Director of Football ops for the boys) and Roger Staubach have recently raved about Johnny Manziel. I could also see Jerry Jones trading this pick, but the temptation of making a huge splash would be too much for the Cowboy's ringmaster to pass up.

Trevor Woods: Oh lord. I don't see Manziel falling this far in the real draft, but if it does happen, Jerry would probably draft him to backup Tony Romo every 8-8 regular season. Thanks for Eric Reid though, Jerry.

Nick Chiamardas: Well, I guess we have our first surprise of 2014 NN Community Mock Draft. What's funny, this is such a Jerry Jones-like move it actually would not be all that surprising. The Cowboys did just commit a ton of money to Tony Romo but as great as Romo has been statisically, many doubt his ablity to lead this team to the promise land. Drafting Manziel would certainly be an eye-brow raiser and could spell the end of the Romo-era in Dallas in the near future. If picking for Dallas in this spot, I'm taking Louisville safety Calvin Pryor (my top overall safety) or DT Timmy Jernigan.
