2014 NN community mock draft: With the 18th pick, the New York Jets select ...

The 2014 Niners Nation NFL mock draft is off and running. We move on to the New York Jets, courtesy of user Desert Dog Runner.

Steve Dykes

We're back for the 18th pick of the 2014 Niners Nation Community Mock Draft. You can see previous picks below in the draft table. You can also follow the mock draft board through this story stream.

With the 18th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, Desert Dog Runner and the New York Jets select Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State. Here are his thoughts on the pick:

This is the guy Jets fans want, and for good reason. I think Rex Ryan is a good coach, but his time in New York may come to an end if he doesn't make the playoffs this year. The Jets need an impact player with this pick, the type of impact that Cooks may be able to provide.

As popular as this guy is on Niners Nation, i will leave it up to the community to praise his strengths, as I know some will. What i will say is boy did the Jets just get fast. Chris Johnson, Stephen Hill, and now Cooks are all sub 4.4 guys. The Jets should now have no problem utilizing the strong arm of Geno Smith.

I believe Cooks would wrestle the No. 2 wide receiver job from Hill and provide the explosiveness that Eric Decker just does not possess. Cooks will also make a fantastic slot receiver when the Jets care to use three WR sets.

Last year Ryan put a huge investment into retaining a top defense. Now that he believes he has his quarterback of the future, he's going to get a dynamic weapon for Smith.

Trevor Woods: I like the logic behind the selection. Geno Smith was comfortable with Tavon Ausin and the speed that went along with him, Cooks would be a nice choice for the Jets, as they desperately need help at wide receiver. Another option could be cornerback. The Jets were unable to land any big free-agent corners and lost Antonio Cromartie, so Kyle Fuller and Jason Verrett could be drafted here. I still expect them to draft a receiver. Good choice, speed kills. Odell Beckham Jr. is still available as well if Cooks isn't to your liking.

Nick Chiamardas: The Jets have needs and just about every position on the field so chances are a "best player available" strategy could work out. Taking Cooks with this pick isn't a terrible idea. Cooks is one of the fastest players in this year's draft and would give the QB (whoever it ends up being) a weapon capable of lining up all over the field. Cooks isn't just a slot receiver in my opinion and is one of my favorite players in this class. Still, the Jets may be better suited looking to fill needs along a susceptible offensive line. With G/T Zack Martin on the board (and likely coming off soon) passing on a versatile lineman would be tough. Taking a guard like Xavier Su'o-Filo may be a tad of a reach but he'd likely solve the revolving door at LG rather quickly. Additionally, if WR is the pick at 18 and Odell Beckham, Jr. is there, it'd be hard to pass him up despite the speed factor that Cooks brings.
