Congratulations 49ers fans, we might have our stupidest story of the offseason. BART is installing new train cars, which they're calling their "Fleet of the Future". They released some pictures of the new trains, including interior shots that show the new seats in the cars. The picture above is one example from BART.gov.
As you can see, the seats include a color scheme that is similar to the Seattle Seahawks colors. It should surprise nobody that this has pissed off a 49ers fan. A Stockton-based fan posted a petition on Change.org demanding BART scrap the seat plans and come up with a new color scheme. The petition states the following:
The Seattle Seahawks are the chief rivals of the San Francisco 49ers. To outfit BART car seats in the team colors of the Seattle Seahawks (i.e. neon green and blue) is an outrage and a slap in the face of every San Francisco 49ers fan who rides BART. We call upon BART General Manager Grace Crunican (who oddly enough worked as Director of the Seattle Department of Transportation prior to joining BART) to scrap plans to adorn BART car seats in neon green and blue and instead choose other colors.
As it points out, the BART GM was previously Director of the Seattle Department of Transportation. If she was involved in picking out the colors, my guess is she did not pick Seahawks colors on purpose. However, I must admit, if she did, that's an absolutely masterful troll job. And now that I think about it, I kind of hope that is the case.
I don't really know why they chose the color in particular, and I could understand how people might not like the look of it. Much like the Seahawks colors are kind of ugly, these new seats are looking kind of ugly.
Normally I would ignore something like this, but I could not help but crack up at this notion of fan anger. I'm really just disappointed the person did not also have a Whitehouse.gov petition. If a Whitehouse.gov petition reaches 100,000 signatures in 30 days, the White House has to issue a response to it. This actually led to the White House providing an awesome response to a petition to create a Death Star. For now, you can entertain yourself by checking out the comments in the Change.org petition. We've even got some all-caps glory.
At the present time, BART does not reach down into the South Bay. It gets down to Fremont in the East Bay, and Millbrae on the Peninsula. Santa Clara County opted out of BART when it first began development back in the 1960s. They are now working on a Silicon Valley extension, that will get them down to the VTA. The VTA is a local light rail that can get you to Levi's Stadium.
For now though, BART will not bring unruly Seahawks fans in the comfort of their own colors directly to Levi's Stadium.
