With the 33rd pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, wiseguy545 and the Houston Texans select Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois. He also considered Pitt quarterback Tom Savage. Here are his thoughts on the pick:
Not surprising in the least, I know. Picking Clowney with the #1 overall pick virtually guarantees that the Texans would take a QB here. In the real world, I probably would have tried to trade up when Manziel and Carr fell out of the top 15, but since that wasn't a possibility I basically sat back and waited to see which quarterbacks would fall to me. The 30-40 range is right for Garoppolo. He has a quick, compact delivery and reads the field well. Doesn't have elite arm strength, but good enough to have success in the NFL. Definitely will need some work before he's ready to take over the reigns, but with a year or two of learning under the Texans' system I'm confident he can become an above-average starter with potential for more.
The other QB I considered with this pick was Pitt's Tom Savage, who is basically the polar opposite of Garoppolo. Savage has an absolute cannon of an arm but lacks the other skills (at this point) required to succeed in the NFL. While Savage's arm strength and frame were extremely tempting, but in the end I decided to pick the more complete prospect in Garoppolo.
Trevor Woods: After deciding to pass on a quarterback in round one, it works out for the Texans here as they nab a good option at the position. Garoppolo possesses quick instincts and a fast release to go along with them and would be put in a great situation with a quarterback friendly coach in Bill O'Brien. The pick should be quarterback here and I like the selection.
Nick Chiamardas: Waiting until the second round to address the need at QB pays off for Houston as they get their guy at 33. Garoppolo has soared up draft boards with a quick release and solid mechanics. He won't have to start from day one but he'll be given every chance to beat out Ryan Fitzpatrick and Case Keenum.
