With the 47th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, Mira Loma Maulers and the Dallas Cowboys select Demarcus Lawrence, DE, Boise State. He also considered Oregon State defensive end Scott Crichton, Arizona State defensive tackle Will Sutton, and Clemson defensive end Vic Beasley. Here are his thoughts on the pick:
They are celebrating in the Valley Ranch war room. First they get their QB and cash cow of the future in Johnny Manziel. Then Demarcus Lawrence falls to the Cowboys at 47. The Cowboys are in desperate need of a talent infusion for their little d in big D. In Lawrence, they get a 4-3 pass rush specialist and/or a 3-4 OLB. AT 6'3', 251 pounds Lawrence could probably benefit from a few more Texas sized steaks, as he will be attempting to fill the very large shoes of the more famous Demarcus (Ware).
Other possible picks at this spot could be DE's Scott Crichton from Oregon State and Vic Beasley from Clemson. The Cowboys badly need a pass rusher (and a ball hawking safety, and a run stopping DT and ext . I think that this will be the spot where they find one.
Trevor Woods: The Boise State product will help the Cowboys defense get on the right track. Lawrence is a strong pass-rusher who has quick acceleration off the snap, leading to him getting past offensive lineman. He has plus speed, which will allow him to be an able coverage linebacker. Lawrence could eventually become an every down player.
Nick Chiamardas: Having used their first pick on QB Johnny Manzeil, the Cowboys have some catching up to do on defense. Lawrence is another late riser in the draft process and one of the better pass rushers available in a draft class that lacks depth at the position. Lawrence will make an impact on passing situations but will have to increase his bulk and ability to set the edge in the run game before he can be an every down player.
