Bruce Thorson-US PRESSWIRE

We're back for the 51st pick of the 2014 Niners Nation Community Mock Draft. You can see previous picks below in the draft table. You can also follow the mock draft board through this story stream.

With the 51st pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, BryKnow and the Chicago Bears select Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska. He also considered Minnesota defensive tackle Ra'Shede Hageman, Nevada offensive lineman Joel Bitonio, and Notre Dame defensive lineman Stephon Tuitt. Here are his thoughts on the pick:

The revamping of the Bears defense continues!  I would have loved to have gone safety here, but when Deone Bucannon left the board at #46, that option kind of went out the window.  Any other safety here would be a bit of a reach.

At 6'2", Baptiste is a different sort of player than 5'8" Tim Jennings, and could make a good pair with him.  The Bears did re-sign Charles Tillman, but he's just on a one-year deal, and is getting up their in age.  Baptiste could play nickel this year, and eventually take over for Tillman covering the taller receivers present in the NFC North.

The best defensive player left on the board here was Ra'Shede Hageman, but the Bears just took Aaron Donald in the first round.  It'd almost be worth it on a pure talent level to add Hageman as well, but in the end, I couldn't justify doubling down there.

Stephon Tuitt is a similar situation--a very talented player, who is not quite what the Bears are looking for, thanks to the signing of Lamarr Houston and Jared Allen.  I think Tuitt and Hageman are both better than Baptiste, so I at least gave them some thought, but I couldn't justify them here.

I also considered Joel Bitonio to take over right tackle from Jordan Mills, but the needs on defense were just too great.

Nick Chiamardas: I'm not as high on Jean-Baptiste as some. Sure he has that size and length that defensive coordinators seem to covet now from their cornerbacks, but I think he has a long way to go technically. After all, he's only been playing corner since 2011. There has been some talk that SJB could make the move to safety which may be the best option for him given his skill set.
