NFL draft results 2014: 49ers pick Dontae Johnson, DB, NC State

The San Francisco 49ers picked with their second selection of the fourth round. This gives them seven players in the fold!

David Butler II-US PRESSWIRE

The San Francisco 49ers used their second 4th round pick to draft NC State defensive back Dontae Johnson. The 49ers are adding a guy that stands 6'2, 200 pounds and conceivably can play anywhere in the secondary. It sounds like he is better as a cornerback, and needs to use his hands with his size. He ran a 4.5 40 and has a 38.5 inch vertical.

The 49ers secondary will feature extensive competition. At cornerback, Tramaine Brock and Chris Culliver are looking like the starters. First round pick Jimmie Ward will compete at nickel back, along with Eric Wright and Perrish Cox. Chris Cook and Darryl Morris will be in the mix as well, but now the addition of Johnson makes for an interesting competition. NFL Network's Mike Mayock likes him better as a cornerback, while Charles Davis viewed him better as a safety.
