49ers draft picks, undrafted free agent signings: Reporting dates and final exams schedule

The San Francisco 49ers will welcome as many as 19 rookies to the roster following the draft and undrafted free agency. We take a look at final exam dates and what it means for reporting to the team.

The San Francisco 49ers completed their 2014 NFL Draft on Saturday, and quickly went about locking up undrafted free agents in the subsequent hours. While that was happening, head coach Jim Harbaugh met with the media to discuss the new class. At one point he was asked if the 12 players would be able to report on Monday. He had a fairly enthusiastic answer:

"Well, the travel arrangements are being made right now, but I’d assume so. Assume that nobody has anything better to do than to be here."

There was a follow-up question about league rules and getting rookies into camp. In case you don't know or forgot, there is a rule that allows players to attend a rookie minicamp, but any subsequent participation is dependent on the date their college or university finishes up final examinations. In the past, the league has set a certain date, and if your exams wrapped up prior to it, you had to wait until that date, while if your exams wrapped up subsequent to it, you had to wait until your exams were done.

Last year, that date was May 13. I came across this article citing May 19 as that date for 2014. I'm going to follow up with the league on this, but in the meantime, I thought I would put together a rundown of the final day of exams for each player's school. 11 of the 49ers incoming rookies wrapped up prior to this week, three will wrap up on Tuesday, two will wrap up on Wednesday, and one will wrap up next weekend. I was a little confused about two players, both undrafted free agents.

Center Dillon Farrell is finishing up at the University of New Mexico. Based on the link below, their exams seem to end the week of May 17. I think they last through the 17th, but I'm not entirely positive.

Linebacker Shayne Skov attended Stanford University, which is on the quarter system. The winter quarter exams ended March 21, while spring exams ended June 11. I mention both because Skov returned to Stanford for a fifth year, which means he might very well have finished up and graduated at the end of the winter semester. He returned for his fifth year in part because he didn't feel completely ready physically, but also because he wanted to earn his degree. He was suspended for the winter quarter of 2013 following his DUI arrest, so it is possible he will not finish until the spring quarter wraps.

If Skov has to wait until finals end in the spring quarter, it would be a tough situation for him from a football perspective. He will be able to attend the 49ers rookie minicamp (I believe scheduled for this week), but spring quarter finals do not end until June 11. He is already facing long odds as a UDFA, and having to wait until mid June would not help matters. I tweeted at him to find out if he graduated in the winter, so we'll see if he responds.

If that May 19 date holds up, all the rookies will participate in the upcoming rookie minicamp, then wait for that date. At that point, all but Skov appear certain to be free to show up. We'll wait and see what is up with Skov's situation.
