Golden Nuggets: Aldon Smith pleads no contest to three felonies, one misdemeanor

Thursday, May 22, 2014 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of 49ers links from around the web.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Good morning everyone. After the draft concluded, I have to admit, I checked out of football mode and have been focusing solely on the NBA playoffs. Even if my fledgling Sacramento Kings are nowhere to be found once again, I love the game second only to Football. So when I heard that Aldon smith plead no contest to his DUI and gun charges my first reaction was shock at not even realizing he had a court date.

There was always a difference in the Kaepernick and Aldon cases for me. I legitimately feel that Kaepernick was being slandered and more than likely did nothing wrong. But Aldon Smith and all of his issues make it really hard to jump to his defense in the same way. I make a point to keep a clear distinction between the members of the 49ers careers and personal lives. As such It would take a lot to get me in favor of rashly cutting ties with a player, and Aldon Smith is no exception. I'm no law expert, but given that the maximum sentence that Aldon can receive is four years, I imagine his no contest plea means little to no jail time. So as far as Aldon's future with the team is concerned, unless he does get hit with significant jail time, I see no reason for his stock with the team to be any lower than it was before. Now lets get to those links.
