Troy Taormina-US PRESSWIRE

We're back for the 56th pick of the 2014 Niners Nation Community Mock Draft. You can see previous picks below in the draft table. You can also follow the mock draft board through this story stream.

With the 56th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, Tre9er and the San Francisco 49ers select Phillip Gaines, CB, Rice. He also considered cornerback Bashaud Breeland, wide receiver Jarvis Landry, and safety Terrence Brooks. Here are his thoughts on the pick:

While relatively unheralded, Phillip Gaines is one of the top corners on my board. He has speed to go with fluidity, man cover and ball skills. He may need some refinement, and playing against somewhat weaker competition while at Rice could concern some GMs, but the pure talent and athleticism he possesses is rare. I see him as a starting CB as early as mid-rookie season.

Most of the top WR were off the board at this point, and Jarvis Landry felt like a reach, especially considering he could be 1-2 years as a role-player/backup on this squad. He's certainly not a #1 receiver, and while I think Michael Crabtree will likely walk, Anquan Boldin is an elite version of Landry, thus making his presence somewhat of a luxury for depth.

Terrence Brooks is certainly worthy of the selection here, but grading similarly to Gaines, the tie-breaker goes to the position of bigger need. Antoine Bethea doesn't have an easy-out in the first few years of his contract, and is getting paid too much money to be a backup player. The 49ers clearly won't have a glaring need at safety in the near future. Granted one injury can change that, but I feel waiting a bit longer can still yield a quality player to groom and serve as a backup.

Trevor Woods: With the 49ers holding pick number 56 and 61, they can pick up both a receiver and cornerback after opting to draft a pass rusher in round one. The choice of Gaines I like, as he has blazing speed and has a knack for breaking up passes thrown his way. He has a similar skillset to that of Chris Culliver, which bodes well if Cully is suspended for any length of time. While Gaines isn't necessarily ready to be a starter on day one, if thrown into the fire he has a chance to succeed sooner rather than later. Nice choice. The case can be made for receiver here, but the 49ers drafted a corner with a nice skill-set while other good options at receiver remain on the board. Pick 61 isn't far away.

Nick Chiamardas: The 6'0, 193 pound corner ran a blazing 4.38 forty at the combine and gives the 49ers size and speed they've lacked in the defensive backfield for some years. Gaines has very good ball skills holding the record at Rice with 42 passes defended despite shorter arms than his peers. The shorter arms and history of minor injuries is a bit of a concern. He'll need to prove he's a better tackler in the NFL than the tape suggests but there is plenty of upside
