The San Francisco 49ers are almost three full weeks into their offseason workout program, and it appears they have a minor injury to deal with. Safety C.J. Spillman tweeted out the picture below, with the caption: Fresh outta surgery ready to get my recovery together now!
According to ESPN's Bill Williamson, Spillman had surgery on his hand, and it was his second surgery of the offseason. There is no word on when the injury occurred, if the surgeries are related, or what. Williamson did say Spillman is expected to be ready for training camp.
Spillman is likely behind Antoine Bethea and Eric Reid on the 49ers safety depth chart, but I'd imagine he'll get some opportunities to show his stuff in training camp. He is primarily a special team player, but Bethea is new enough to the 49ers system that nothing is really guaranteed. And of course, the 49ers still could end up selecting a safety later this week in the NFL Draft. Eric Reid is likely the only true sure thing in the 49ers safety depth chart for now. I imagine Bethea will be starting come Week 1, but there is a lot of time between now and then.
