As soon as news broke that Colin Kaepernick had agreed to a contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers, one of the first questions that people wanted answered was what this meant for Alex Boone, Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, and/or Michael Iupati. Some people asked about one guy, some people asked about all of them. We didn't know contract details at that point, so there was not much to be said, but it was not going to stop the speculation.
A day later, we have the contract details, and we know where the 49ers stand in terms of 2014 cap room. Well, we have a pretty good idea. Jason Hurley has the 49ers with just under $5.5 million in cap space, while Over The Cap has the 49ers with just over $6.4 million in cap space. That $900,000 difference is noticeable, but at least we know where in the neighborhood the 49ers stand.
Now that we have a better idea, the extension question becomes a little more pertinent. We still don't know the 49ers game plan for extending players, but at least we know there is in fact room to do a deal or two. With that in mind, I've posted a poll with a lot of the pertinent names, and then "Other". The players include a mix of 2015 and 2016 free agents. If you pick Other, please specify in the comments. Maybe you think the 49ers do a smaller deal with some lesser known player. Or maybe it's a big name.
Whatever the case, who is the guy who next signs on the dotted line? Vote in the poll, and then in the comments let us know WHEN you think such a deal happens.
