Last week, I put together a quick post about rumors that North Carolina linebacker Darius Lipford was going to sign with the 49ers early this week. We have now seen some clarification on the matter. Matt Barrows is reporting Lipford is coming to town on Tuesday for a workout, but is not necessarily set to sign on the dotted line.
We discussed Lipford in the context of outside linebacker, but given his work as a 4-3 outside linebacker, he could very well end up on the inside. Barrows mentioned it in his article, and Lipford also got some work as a middle linebacker during this past spring practice. The 49ers could always use some depth at both positions given NaVorro Bowman's injury, and Aldon Smith's potential suspension. They have some solid options, but as Jim Harbaugh says, iron sharpens iron, and another linebacker with some versatility is not the worst idea.
Last week, we discussed Lipford's injury issues. He suffered a torn ACL i late 2011, and then aggravated it in July 2012. He missed the 2012 season, and then played ten games in 2013. He should be in fairly solid shape at this point, but that will be something to track in the meantime. There is no word on what other teams Lipford will speak with before training camp. Lipford sent out this tweet earlier today:
Can't do anything but thank God for the journey I'm about to embark on. #Calibound
