Golden Nuggets: The Opening Of Levi's This Week

Wednesday, August 13th, 2014 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of San Francisco 49ers links from around the Internet

Kelley L Cox-US PRESSWIRE

This Sunday, the 49ers will host their first official game at the new Levi's Stadium. While it is only a preseason game, it is the fan's first chance to catch a football game at the new stadium. The 2nd and 3rd preseason games are usually trial periods for the 2nd units and the players looking to make the 53 man roster. It is unlikely that we will see the potential starting units play much during these games. Still, there are plenty of battles out there that need to be settled.

The position battle for who plays alongside Patrick Willis is still up in the air. Wilhoite is a known player who replaced Willis at times last year and held his own alongside NaVorro Bowman. But the rookie LB Borland can still have a say if he performs well in the next 3 games. The offensive line needs to prove that it will be fine without holdout Boone on the team. If the team is in fact listening to trade offers, they need to be sure that their o-line will not have a big drop off before actually trading him. The team relies heavily on running the ball and a stout line is necessary to remain a power running team. These next games will give the coaching staff a good look at how the o-line plays. With a team this talented, the battle for roster spots makes all the preseason games more intriguing than usual.
