San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio met with the media earlier today before the team hits the practice field. We will have a transcript for you later tonight or first thing tomorrow, but in the meantime, he had a few interesting comments worth noting.
Tramaine Brock
#49ers Tramaine Brock's ankle sprain to keep him out Sunday vs Broncos & won't practice until next week. Cook, Cully have minor knee issues
— Cam Inman (@CamInman) August 13, 2014
Things have been rather quiet on this front. This is the first we've really heard about Brock's injury in a while. It sounds like the team is being extra cautious with this. They figure they know what they have in Brock, so there is no need for him to aggravate his ankle injury. I'd prefer seeing him on the field, but more than anything I just want see him healthy Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys.
Inside Linebacker
Fangio said competition to replace NaVorro Bowman at ILB is even. He said that if Chris Borland wins it, he'll play "mike" and Willis "Jack"

Borland did not exactly impress on Thursday during his linebacker work. He was solid on special teams but he was all over the place at linebacker. Michael Wilhoite struggled in coverage, but he did good work on a blitz. The run defense as a whole was a problem with the backup defensive line in place, so it was kind of a wash assessing the linebackers work, to some extent. In reality, this likely is just a way to keep both Borland and Wilhoite motivated. They probably don't need the motivation, but Fangio is not one to dole out a ton of compliments, anyway.
Ian Williams
#49ers DC Fangio said NT @IWilliams95 has been cleared to practice. Team will see how he does in individual drills this afternoon.

This sums up just about what we already know. I suspect Williams does mostly individual work this week, and then is back to team drills next week.
