Golden Nuggets: 49ers receive much needed reinforcements

New, comments

Thursday, August 14, 2014 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of 49ers links from around the web.

Jamie Squire

Good morning everyone. Last week, Jim Harbaugh told the media he expected some reinforcements on the defensive line. Man, he was not lying. Sure enough, the defensive line starters returned to practice as well as several other key players. In all, five probable defensive starters returned to practice in Chris Culliver, Tramaine Brock, Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, and Ian Williams. I don't expect or even really want to see them play a lot against the Broncos on Sunday. But not needing to send out the second or third string defense on the first series may help the depth not get beaten down so quickly this time around.

On offense, LaMichael James, Brandon Lloyd, and Michael Crabtree also returned to practice yesterday. With all due respect to Crabtree and Lloyd, I am more interested to see how and when the coaching staff plays LaMichael James in the preseason. Will he start? Directly back up Carlos Hyde? The first game he plays will probably tell us just where LaMike stands after all the injuries. He is the only change of pace on the roster, so I think he may actually get some decent run this season. It's pretty amazing considering where most of us thought he stood after the draft. Well, we have a good selection of links today so lets not waste any more time.
