Antoine Bethea ruled out remainder of game with concussion

The San Francisco 49ers lost safety Antoine Bethea the rest of the day with a concussion. We break down what it means.

The San Francisco 49ers lost safety Antoine Bethea, after he suffered a concussion in the second quarter. After going down, he was helped off the field, with a member of the 49ers training staff holding his helmet. That is usually a sign that the player suffered a concussion.

Craig Dahl replaced Bethea at strong safety, and has not been overly impressive thus far. The rest of the second string are starting to make their way onto the field, after a less than stellar performance from the first string pass defense. Peyton Manning was 12 of 14 for 102 yards and a touchdown in his first two drives.

Bethea will go through the concussion protocol, but given that this is the preseason, I would be surprised if he ended up on the field a week from now. It helps getting him work next to Eric Reid, but the goal is to be 100 percent for the start of the regular season.
