49ers vs. Chargers, preseason 2014: Game Time, TV Schedule, Live Online Stream, Injuries

New, comments

The 49ers host their second game Levi's Stadium, this time facing the San Diego Chargers on FOX in front of the country. We break down the nuts and bolts on how and where to watch the game.

The San Francisco 49ers get their Week 3 "dress rehearsal" game on national television, as they face the San Diego Chargers on FOX at 1 p.m. PT. The Week 3 preseason game is considered by many to be a dress rehearsal game, but in reality, the 49ers probably will only send their starters out into the second quarter at most.

Today's game is nationally televised on FOX, which means we get Joe Buck and Troy Aikman in the booth, and Erin Andrews on the sideline. I'm generally fine with Buck and Aikman, and while some take issue with their work, at least we're not getting the Ari Wolfe, Kurt Warner NFL Network crew.

The big storyline of course is how the turf will hold up. The 49ers replaced a huge portion of it with temporary turf that will subsequently be replaced next week. The 49ers have assured the Chargers everything will be fine, and this is a nationally televised game. The 49ers can't afford an embarrassing situation, and I'm sure Buck and Aikman will have some comments on it.

Injuries

Once again, there will not be an "inactive" list before the game, but we've got some idea of who probably will not be playing. They break down as follows:

PUP: LB NaVorro Bowman (knee), TE Garrett Celek (back), DL Kaleb Ramsey (NA)
NFI: RB Marcus Lattimore (knee/hamstring), FB Trey Millard (knee), CB Keith Reaser (knee) and G Brandon Thomas (knee)

Additionally, we know Alex Boone will not be in attendance due to his contract dispute.

Antoine Bethea suffered a concussion last week against the Broncos. Jim Harbaugh said he expected Bethea to be cleared, but still did not expect him to play. We don't know if Ian Williams, Tramaine Brock, Justin Smith, Ray McDonald or Patrick Willis will play. All are practicing in full, but have yet to play this preseason. Anthony Davis is also getting back to practice, but he is not expected to play until Week 1.

The big news is the return of LaMichael James. The 49ers running back and return man is scheduled to make his preseason debut. Jewel Hampton, Alfonso Smith and Glenn Winston will get the bulk of the carries after Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde, but I'd imagine LMJ gets a little bit of work.
