53-man roster projection following first roster cuts

We've got a 53-man roster projection follow roster cuts, and before the 49ers preseason finale.

Ezra Shaw

The San Francisco 49ers conducted their first roster cuts Monday evening, getting down to the required 75-man roster limit. They will face the Houston Texans on Thursday, and then make their final cuts before 1 p.m. PT on Saturday. Before we get to the Texans game, I wanted to put together a 53-man roster projection. The first roster cuts don't have a huge impact on it, but there are some changes following the 49ers win over the Chargers.

I continue to stick with the two quarterbacks, with Josh Johnson drawing the short end of the stick. You could say Johnson's skillset is more similar to Kap's than Gabbert's is, but I don't think they look for a poor man's version of Kap if Kap were hurt.

I am going to stick with Alfonso Smith as the extra running back, and add Glenn Winston to the practice squad. Jewel Hampton would seem to be out of the picture, and I think Smith's special teams experience gives him the slight edge over Winston.

I still have 11 defensive backs on the roster. It seems like too many, but I'm just not seeing who I dump. I moved Craig Dahl back onto the roster in light of Vic Fangio's recent comments, and removed Perrish Cox. It came down to Cox vs. Chris Cook. On the one hand, Cox would seemingly be a safe backup nickel option. On the other hand, I think Cook has more general upside as a cornerback in case they need help outside. Of course, if they are happy with Dontae Johnson, then maybe Cook gets the axe.
