The San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans will rest plenty of starters for their preseason finale. The Texans announced Jadeveon Clowney, Andre Johnson, Arian Foster, J.J. Watt, D.J. Swearinger, and Ryan Fitzpatrick are among 18 starters that will not play. Considering there are 22 starters, we're going to see plenty of Texans backups.
The 49ers have not announced which starters will not play, but Trent Baalke did say that selected veterans will not play. On the KNBR pre-game show, he said Glenn Winston would get a lot of work. This is not a shock given that the team needs to have Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde ready to go for the start of the regular season. There is little to be gained from having Gore and Hyde get work against the Texans second team defense.
Winston emerged on the scene last week with 58 yards on eight carries, including a 27-yard touchdown run. It was only one game, and I still think he is ticketed for the practice squad, but he's going to get himself some work Thursday evening.
