The San Francisco 49ers made a roster move on Sunday, waiving wide receiver Jon Baldwin, and claiming wide receiver L'Damian Washington from the Dallas Cowboys. While Baldwin has a lot of the physical tools, things just never came together for him. The 49ers acquired him from the Kansas City Chiefs for A.J. Jenkins last August. Who would have thought the Chiefs would end up with the better end of that deal?

Washington is a speedy guy, who stands 6'3, and weighed in at 195 at the Combine. He likely needs to put on a little weight to handle the rigors of the NFL. More importantly, scouting reports state that he needs to work on his hands. He ran a 4.38 40 at the Combine, and a 4.43 40 at his Pro Day. It sounds like he thinks he's faster than that (shocker there). Our Cowboys blog had an article shortly after the draft discussing how he was a guy fans would like.

Fooch's Update: Washington injured the AC joint in his right shoulder in early June and missed the rest of the offseason. I'm guessing he's back now.

Given that Washington is just now joining the team, he is likely competing for a practice squad spot, unless he can stand out on special teams. Washington does not have return experience, but according to this scouting report, he was a valuable gunner for Missouri. The 49ers will be without Michael Crabtree and Brandon Lloyd this week against the Baltimore Ravens, and with Baldwin struggling to do much of anything, Washington gets a chance to show something.

We'll have more on Washington, but for now, here are some scouting reports, along with a feature video over at Grantland.
