49ers roster cuts 2014: Josh Johnson earns roster spot, according to Matt Barrows

Matt Barrows is reporting the San Francisco 49ers have kept quarterback Josh Johnson on their initial 53-man roster. The team had until 1 p.m. PT Saturday to make their roster cuts. The moves are still trickling in, but it would appear Johnson is safe for now.

Johnson put together a very solid preseason as the third quarterback on the depth chart. Johnson finished the four games 27 of 36 for 259 yards, 3 touchdowns, 1 interception, and a QB rating of 110.8. He outperformed Blaine Gabbert from a statistical perspective, although there has been some talk of different play-calling between Gabbert and Johnson impacting that.

There is no word yet on Blaine Gabbert, but all indications are that he will make the 49ers 53-man roster. The team could decide to eat his $2 million and change, but I just don't see it. I think he is the first guy they look to if the worst were to happen. I could be wrong, which is entirely possible given my track record on these roster cuts, but I see it as Gabbert holding down the backup job, and Johnson at No. 3.

It is also important to note that this current iteration of the 53-man roster is not likely to be the final version when the 49ers kick off against the Dallas Cowboys next week. They can make a roster move with Glenn Dorsey on Tuesday, potentially placing him on the injured reserve with return designation. Additionally, there could be players on waivers that interest the team.
