Two years ago, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he would be in attendance for the San Francisco 49ers opening game at Levi's Stadium. Matt Maiocco is now reporting the commissioner will not attend Sunday Night Football.
The commissioner usually attends stadium openings given how much the league likes to beat its chest about its facilities. However, given how hot things are right now, it makes sense for him to keep a low profile for now. He is among the least popular people in the NFL right now, and it would likely be a distraction having him around.
It will be interesting to see when he does make his next public appearance. I have to assume that while this investigation is going on into his and the league's handling of the Ray Rice case, his people have told him to lay low. There's nothing really to be gained for him getting out in public as long as the questions remain about his competency as commissioner. Although, I suppose in saying that, some folks will say he should never show his face again!
