Tramaine Brock not expected to play Sunday, according to Eric Branch

The 49ers are expected to be without cornerback Tramaine Brock for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. We look at his injury and the depth chart.

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Tramaine Brock is expected to miss Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinalsaccording to Eric Branch, and confirmed by Adam Caplan. The 49ers cornerback suffered a toe injury in Week 1, and it is believed to be turf toe. The 49ers have not come out and said it is a turf toe injury, but that would explain his extended absence.

The recovery time from a turf toe injury can range from a few days to over a month. This article discusses how a Grade 3 sprain (the worst) can require 3-6 weeks of recovery. A couple years ago, Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells suffered a turf toe injury, and it was bad enough that the team actually placed him on injured reserve with the return designation. The 49ers used their spot already on Glenn Dorsey, so it is not an option.

None of this should be construed to mean Brock will miss that much time. It is all a matter of context. According to Matt Barrows, Brock was seen on Tuesday in a walking boot. I imagine he will be a DNP for practice this week, and then we just wait until next week to see if he returns.

Perrish Cox would likely once again start in his place. Cox had a generally solid performance for the second straight week, and is proving to be a strong option for the 49ers.
