49ers-Cardinals injury report: Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald sit out

The 49ers and Cardinals released their Wednesday practice participation reports. We take a look at some issues each team is facing.

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals each released their practice reports for Wednesday, and both teams have some issues to work through at important positions.

The 49ers were without tight ends Vernon Davis and Vance McDonald. Both were hurt during the 49ers loss to Chicago this past Sunday. Davis had an MRI on his ankle, and head coach Jim Harbaugh said it appeared the team dodged a bullet. There is some optimism he might play on Sunday. McDonald said he had no structural damage, and is hopeful he can play on Sunday.

Joe Staley was an unexpected appearance on the report, showing up as limited due to a knee issue. We won't get any clarification on what the issue is, so I am just assuming he will play on Sunday. On the other side of the line, hopefully at some point this week we see Anthony Davis get in even a limited practice.

On the Cardinals side, there are two things of note. The first is that Andre Ellington did not practice. It is important to note that he did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday last week because of his foot issue. He was then limited on Friday, and listed as questionable on the final injury report, but he played on Sunday. With Jonathan Dwyer deactivated following his arrest, there is no reason to think Ellington does not play.

Finally, earlier today, Bruce Arians said Drew Stanton remained the starter at this point, as Carson Palmer continues rehabbing a nerve injury in his shoulder. Palmer was a limited participant at today's practice. He was limited all last week, and then was deactivated on Sunday. The only thing that would give us a clear indication he might play is if he upgrades to full. I would not be surprised if Bruce Arians was sand-bagging us on this, but we'll see.
