Fooch's Update: I was poking through the Odds Shark list of odds, and Bovada has climbed from 4.5 to 5 since this morning.
The San Francisco 49ers travel to face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, and the odds currently have San Francisco as a 4.5 point favorite. The 49ers opened as a 3.5 point favorite back in April, and the line climbed to 4.5 by the middle of the summer. The line has bounced around a bit, and some folks actually had it up to 5.5 or 6. It is no surprise it would come back down in light of the recent run of negative 49ers news.
The Cowboys have dealt with numerous injuries to a defense that was already in rough shape. They lost Sean Lee earlier in the offseason, then cornerback Orlando Scandrick was suspended, and then they lost Demarcus Lawrence to a broken foot. Oh, and now apparently Rolando McClain will be their starting middle linebacker. McClain is talented, but has never really been able to put it all together.
The number that fascinates me most is the over/under, which is 51. The Cowboys defense is looking like a train wreck, and the 49ers have plenty of question marks of their own. We know the 49ers will be without NaVorro Bowman and Aldon Smith, and it is possible they will be without Ray McDonald, depending on what the 49ers decide to do. I do think the 49ers have the talent to overcome those losses, but I would not be surprised to see a shootout in Week 1. Would something like 31-21 score really be that shocking?
