Fooch's Update: 49ers lose

The San Francisco 49ers return to action this week, traveling down to Glendale to face the Arizona Cardinals. The game kicks off at 1:05 p.m. PT on FOX. It is not a national broadcast, but it is getting into a few major markets around the country. The game will be called by Thom Brennaman, David Diehl, and Laura Okmin.

The 49ers are coming off a brutal collapse against the Chicago Bears in Week 2. The 49ers blew a 17-0 lead, losing 28-20, dropping them to 1-1 on the season. They head into Arizona having won 9 of the last 10 games against the Cardinals. This marks the first divisional matchup for the NFC West, which looks to build on last year's strong performance. The Cardinals are off to a 2-0 start, while the 49ers, Seahawks and Rams all sit at 1-1.

Generally, a Week 3 game is not a must-win. The 49ers started 1-2 last year, and rebounded to reach the NFC title game. However, in the NFC West, home divisional wins seem kind of important. The Cardinals remain in a tie for first place with a loss, but they also would then potentially have to find a road divisional win to even get to 3-3. The division winner is probably going to need to go at least 4-2. Losing a home divisional game puts that team behind the eight ball pretty quickly. I'd say it is not a "must"-win game, but a loss would be worse than a non-divisional home loss.
