Golden Nuggets: Caging the Eagles

Monday, September 29, 2014 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of 49ers links from around the web.

Bob Stanton-USA TODAY Sports

This game was definitely "All about that D". To be able to contain a high scoring offense like the Eagles and not just shut them out, but completely demoralize them was a wonderful sight. Just astounding when you think that for about 85% of the game, the Eagles could not even get into 49ers territory. They couldn't run. The secondary was all over Nick Foles' receivers. It was just a masterful performance.

Here are some other odds and ends before we get to the links:

  • The defense had ZERO penalties
  • After Vernon Davis left the game, Bruce Miller started lining up as a tight end on some plays (which he has done in the past), and the 49ers were able to continue their power running
  • When Perrish Cox was asked what the difference was between his play last year and this year, he says, "I'm on the field"
  • On that 55 yard TD catch & run by Frank Gore, where the entire Eagles defense didn't see him release, even Harbaugh didn't see him and had no idea who Kaepernick was throwing to
  • Kaepernick had at least 3 really good passes to receivers who were well covered which I consider in the realm of "throwing a receiver open": the TD to Stevie Johnson, the sideline pass to Anquan Boldin which he made a great stretching catch, and the laser he threaded to the middle of the field to Vernon Davis who had 4 men surrounding him (never mind that VD dropped another catchable ball)
  • In comparing this game which ended the 2-game losing streak with last year's game 4 which did the same thing, we see that the 49ers out-rushed the Eagles (218-22 yards) and last year they out-rushed the Rams (219-18 yards).
