Week 4 is officially a wrap as the Kansas City Chiefs beat the absolute piss out of the New England Patriots. The Chiefs jumped on top late in the first quarter, and never really let up, defeating the Patriots 41-14.
This was an all around dominant performance against a Patriots team that has been inconsistent at best this year. Tom Brady was fairly horrific, but the Chiefs put together a strong outing on both sides of the ball. The offense moved at will, with Alex Smith finishing 20 of 26 for 248 yards and three touchdowns, and Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis combining for 199 yards on 34 carries. The defense had its way with the Patriots, recording two interceptions, including a pick-six, and eventually forcing the Patriots to tap out when they replaced Tom Brady late with Jimmy Garoppolo.
The Chiefs are headed west later this week to face the San Francisco 49ers. Naturally, the return of Alex Smith will provide plenty of storylines. We'll have all that stuff in the Nuggets. And while we will have some Alex Smith related content, we will try not to overdo it from a memories perspective.
The big question after this game will be how the 49ers cover Travis Kelce. The Chiefs tight end hauled in eight passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. We know how much Alex Smith likes that tight end seam route. Michael Wilhoite has shown some great work in coverage the last couple weeks, and Patrick Willis has had plenty of similar experience. That could be a big factor in how the 49ers approach the Chiefs passing game.
Whatever the case, it should be an interesting week.
