The San Francisco 49ers waived running back LaMichael James on Monday, and 24 hours later he has cleared waivers and is a free agent. I don't know whether to say I'm surprised or not that James was not claimed. He always struck me as a talented running back, but the rest of the league does not seem overly concerned.
LMJ's dead money on the 49ers 2014 salary cap is either approximately $251,184 or $301,184, with $213,436 in dead money on the 2015 cap. The 2014 figure combines $213,436 in prorated signing bonus, $37,748 in Week 1 salary, and potentially his $50,000 workout bonus. I don't know for certain if he was paid the bonus.
In other news, the Cleveland Browns waived offensive lineman Ryan Seymour. The 49ers waived him at the end of training camp, and he was quickly claimed by the Browns. There were beat writer reports that the 49ers had hoped to sign Seymour to their practice squad. With Alex Boone back on the roster, I do not see them making a waiver claim, but if Seymour clears waivers, maybe the 49ers try and bring him back that way.
