The first domino appears set to fall in the NFL's search for new head coaches. The Buffalo Bills are currently negotiating a contract with Rex Ryan to become their next head coach. A deal is not done, and we know how quickly things can change. However, it appears this will happen sometime soon.
More importantly for 49ers fans purposes, there are reports that Ryan and the Bills are already talking with Greg Roman to become the Bills next offensive coordinator. Roman had reportedly interviewed for the head coach position, but he also interviewed for several OC positions around the league. He had interviewed for or had requests for interviews with the Buccaneers, Jaguars, Browns and Rams.
Roman has been among the more popular interview candidates for OC roles. Plenty of 49ers fans will be happy to see him go, but it will be interesting to see what he can do in a different situation. The Bills quarterback situation is unsettled with Kyle Orton retired, and E.J. Manuel not exactly in the best of favor with the last coaching staff. The Bills do have a strong running game, although injuries have been a problem for that group.
As for the 49ers, it removes one potential candidate. However, with Ryan getting a job, that could be the impetus for a few other dominos to start falling. One issue is that Josh McDaniels and Dan Quinn are still alive in the playoffs and cannot conduct followup interviews this week. Quinn was a favorite for the Jets job, so we'll see how that forces the rest of these situations.
