A Denver radio host is reporting the San Francisco 49ers have hired Adam Gase as their head coach. Pro Football Talkacknowledged his report, but followed up by saying a source said Gase has not agreed to terms yet. Florio acknowledged it still could happen, but had not happened yet. These reports could in fact both be true. Gase could have agreed to join the team, but they could be negotiating contract terms. Either way, business is picking up.
Trent Baalke was in Denver on Tuesday for a second interview with Gase. Baalke departed with nothing apparently done, and Gase speaking with the Broncos Tuesday evening. If a deal is close to done, or done, it likely meant Baalke was back in the Bay Area putting the final touches on convincing Jed York that Gase is the guy for them. There have been rumblings Jim Tomsula was the strongest internal candidate, with Jed York strongly in support of him. If Baalke was able to sell the team on Gase, I would be fine with that. I still trust Baalke's football acumen, and would be willing to provide his choice with the benefit of the doubt.
If Gase gets the job, he would come over from the Denver Broncos, where he had been since 2009, serving as the offensive coordinator for the past two seasons. Prior to that he was their quarterbacks coach in 2011 and 2012, and wide receivers coach in 2009 and 2010. He got his coaching start with the Detroit Lions under head coach Steve Mariucci. He started as a scouting assistant in 2003 and 2004, became an offensive assistant in 2005 and 2006, and then served as quarterbacks coach in 2007. He spent one season with the 49ers as an offensive assistant under Mike Martz in 2008.
