Jason Tarver, Marc Trestman could join 49ers on Jim Tomsula coaching staff

The 49ers coaching staff could be evolving fairly quickly. We have an early report on possible OC and DC options.

The reports are coming in fast and furious. Following word that Jim Tomsula has been promoted to head coach for the San Francisco 49ers, we have some early reports on potential coaching staff hires. Tim Kawakami is reporting a league source told him Jason Tarver is in line to take over as defensive coordinator, and there is a possibility Marc Trestman could end up as offensive coordinator. Matt Maiocco reported on Tarver as well, while Cam Inman mentioned Trestman.

The Raiders obviously are easy to laugh at, but in talking with Raiders folks, they liked Tarver's work over that of Dennis Allen. Tarver apparently blitzed a lot early on, but cut back later when injuries and whatnot cost the secondary some talent. Tarver was defensive coordinator for the Raiders from 2012 to 2014. Prior to that he was David Shaw's defensive coordinator at Stanford in 2011. Before that, he spent six seasons coaching outside linebackers with the 49ers. He actually joined the 49ers staff as an offensive assistant from 2001 to 2005, before making the switch to defense.

Marc Trestman spent the last two seasons as head coach of the Chicago Bears. He has an extensive history, including two seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the 49ers back in 1995 and 1996. He was fired in most unceremonious fashion, with Eddie DeBartolo simply saying, "He's gone" during a press conference beginning the transition from George Seifert to Steve Mariucci. Well, now he could very well end up back. This seems less certain of the two, but it is on the radar for now
