Vic Fangio, Ed Donatell could accept Washington defensive positions on Tuesday

The Washington defense could see some improvement in 2015. After some down times with Jim Haslett in charge, they are expected to add a pair of ex-49ers coaches.

Fooch's Note: Fangio is headed to Chicago, instead.

There is nothing official yet, but Jason LaCanfora is reporting former San Francisco 49ers defensive coaches Vic Fangio and Ed Donatell are expected to join Jay Gruden's coaching staff in Washington. Fangio would obviously be the defensive coordinator, and I would assume Donatell would take over coaching the Washington secondary.

It stinks to lose both of them, but the one bit of upside is that the 49ers would not have to face them in 2015. Of course, if this plays out, Fangio and Donatell will have a whole lot of work to do. The Washington defense ranked 29th in points allowed, and 27th in total defense according to Football Outsiders. Jim Haslett previously served as Washington's defensive coordinator, and was an absolute train wreck recently. They will improvement just from the new coaching staff, but it will be interesting to see how quickly Fangio and Donatell can get this group turned around.

In the meantime, the 49ers are hiring former Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver. His role has not been clarified yet, but the expectation is he will handle DC work for the 49ers. It is hard to get excited about an ex-Raiders coach, but we know he will have more talent in San Francisco. I am more curious to see who will coach the secondary, and how that group will perform. Ed Donatell seemingly did some great work with that group.
