The Chicago Bears have hired Adam Gase to be their next offensive coordinator, according to multiple reports, and we are now just getting more questions. Matt Maiocco is reporting the San Francisco 49ers continued to pursue Gase, even after deciding on Jim Tomsula as head coach.
Maiocco's story says the team continued to have contact with Gase over the last week. Maybe they pushed hard for him as a potential offensive coordinator, maybe not. It is interesting given reports from the Senior Bowl that Gase had a poor final interview with the 49ers. The 49ers are reported to have had an 8 1/2 hour interview with Gase in Denver. It is possible the reports about a poor interview are BS, but there were also reports Baalke and Gase spoke on the phone the day the 49ers announced the hiring of Tomsula. Maybe something went wrong with that interview. There are rumors Gase and his agent asked for more money than the 49ers were willing to pay him, but that's just idle speculation for now.
All of this is to say, the whole situation, much like this coaching search process, is just plain weird. We'd like to hope the 49ers have a plan, but given that they have no plans on being transparent, we're left twisting in the window wondering what may or may not be going on. It's a fun time to be a 49ers fan!
