Golden Nuggets: 49ers still trying to fill the coaching staff

Good morning everyone. The 49ers are finally starting to fill out Jim Tomsula's coaching staff. Jason Tarver has been added as linebackers coach and senior defensive assistant. The process is still ongoing, and I would expect a good number of hirings over the next few days. One thing though, has been made painfully clear in the past few weeks. The 49ers reputation around the league and within their own (former) staff  has taken a hit.

It is really disheartening to see so many of Jim Harbaugh's staff making lateral moves to other teams. I am not sure if it's the 49ers who don't want them, or if they don't feel comfortable with the direction the front office is headed in. This has little to do with the Tomsula hiring (I think) and more to do with the way Jed York and Trent Baalke handled the Jim Harbaugh situation over the last few seasons.

Vic Fangio took the defensive coordinator job in Chicago even though I am positive he could have stayed with the 49ers had he wanted to. Adam Gase, who the 49ers were considering for head coach, and offensive coordinator even after hiring Tomsula, took the offensive coordinator job with Chicago. Ed Donatell, who was reported to be staying with the 49ers (and who I think would have made a great defensive coordinator) made a lateral move to, you guessed it, Chicago.

One of the more interesting things that came out yesterday was the 49ers interviewing Eric Mangini for defensive coordinator. It is interesting because ever since he was added to the staff, the assumption was that Jim Harbaugh was the only reason he was employed. Jim Saw something in him and wanted him on his staff, even making him tight ends coach despite his defensive background.

It seems like a lot of people don't think much of him as a coach, probably due to his stints as a head coach with the Jets and Browns. Personally, I am high on him as a coordinator even without taking his success as the Patriots defensive coordinator into account. His time as an analyst at ESPN demonstrated his shortcomings as a head coach, but accentuated what makes him a great coordinator candidate. He clearly has a great football mind, but lacks the sort of charisma you want from the head man. In short, he lacks the domineering personality needed to make an entire locker room want to run through a brick wall for him.  I know a lot of people would barf if he was hired, but I am actually hoping for it. Anyways, lets get to those links!
