The San Francisco 49ers look to move another step closer to filling out their defensive coaching staff. According to Washington, DC reporter Dianna Marie Russini, the team is expected to interview Perry Fewell. The specific position is not known, but he has extensive experience coaching defensive backs.

Fewell was let go (parted ways, fired, whatever) by the New York Giants this offseason after serving six years as their defensive coordinator. Prior to that, he was defensive coordinator in Buffalo from 2006 to 2009, and served part of 2009 as interim head coach. Before that, he coached defensive backs for 11 years. He spent three seasons at Vanderbilt, and then handled the same duties with Jacksonville, St. Louis, and Chicago. The man has coached a few defensive backs in his time.

If Fewell gets the job, he would be yet another former defensive coordinator taking a step down. Obviously being fired makes that a little easier, but it adds some experience to the table. He would likely join Jason Tarver and Eric Mangini as coaches with extensive coaching experience on the defensive side of the ball. Mangini is expected to have the defensive coordinator title, but it sounds like this is going to be a bit more of a committee approach. Matt Maiocco suggested Jason Tarver would get some input on play-calls, and adding another experienced mind like Fewell might only add to that.

For those concerned about too many cooks in the kitchen, remember that the 49ers offensive staff had something like 17 assistants last year. Whatever the case, it will be interesting to see how this staff continues to develop.
