Tom Gamble could be returning to 49ers front office

The San Francisco 49ers could be welcoming back a key Trent Baalke lieutenant. We break down the latest on that news.

The San Francisco 49ers might be welcoming back an old friend to the front office. 95.7 The Game's John Middlekauff is reporting league sources have said Tom Gamble is expected to return to the team. A role was not specified in the report.

Gamble most recently served as Vice President of player personnel for the Philadelphia Eagles. He took that role starting in 2013, but was fired recently in what some perceived as a power struggle between head coach Chip Kelly and general manager Howie Roseman. He was escorted out of the building and that was that.

Gamble was recently spotted at a coffee shop in Mobile during the Senior Bowl, having just wrapped up a conversation with Trent Baalke. The two have extensive history. Gamble was the 49ers director of player personnel from 2011 to 2013. Prior to that he was director of pro personnel from 2005 to 2011. It appears he joined the 49ers at the same time as Baalke.

Gamble is often credited with being a key part of the group that put together a lot of the talent of the Harbaugh era. The front office as a whole was strong, and getting him back in the mix is decidedly a good thing. For those wondering why he left in the first place, his father was ill, and he went to Philadelphia to be closer to him.
