The San Francisco 49ers coaching staff might get one step closer to completion in the next day or two. Jason LaCanfora is reporting the 49ers are spending Saturday interviewing former New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. He is believed to be interviewing to be the defensive backs coach. He coached defensive backs for eight years before moving into the defensive coordinator role.
The 49ers defensive coaching staff seems to be rounding into form. As things currently stand, here is what the defensive side of the coaching staff looks like. The 49ers have not made any of the assistants official, but reports indicate this is how it is shaking out.
Head coach: Jim Tomsula
Defensive coordinator: Eric Mangini
Linebackers: Jason Tarver
Secondary: Maybe Perry Fewell
Defensive assistant: Ejiro Evero
Matt Barrows indicated Evero is likely to be the assistant secondary coach. Evero was a quality control coach in 2011, offensive assistant in 2012 and 2013, and then a defensive assistant in 2014. He was a four-year player at UC Davis, and spent a training camp with the Oakland Raiders as an undrafted free agent. He followed that by getting into coaching with UC Davis.
The one position that has had nothing really officially connected is defensive line coach. Of course, Jim Tomsula has extensive experience there, but it seems likely that the team would bring in an assistant to handle that given Tomsula's promotion. Bryant Young expressed some interest in it, and according to Barrows, the team has had internal discussions about BY in the past. Apparently Young left his Florida job after the 2013 season due to a personal matter he was dealing with, but it is not know what is current status is.
Ryan Sakamoto of NinerFans.com had an interesting idea for the defensive line coach job. Former NFL linebacker Bryan Cox is currently the Atlanta Falcons defensive line coach, and has been coaching defensive lines since 2006. He was assistant defensive line coach for the New York Jets during Eric Mangini's tenure there, and then defensive line coach during Mangini's tenure in Cleveland.
It appears he is under contract with Atlanta, so they might not let him out. And of course, we don't even know if he would want to re-join Mangini in San Francisco. But he's a name to keep on your radar with Mangini reportedly taking over the defensive coordinator job.
