St. Louis Rams bring back Nathaniel Hackett for second OC interview

The St. Louis Rams are interviewing one of their offensive coordinator candidates for the second time. Could this mean something for the San Francisco 49ers and Rob Chudzinski?

The San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams are both in the midst of a search for a new offensive coordinator, and both have reportedly targeted Indianapolis Colts assistant Rob Chudzinski. Now it sounds like the St. Louis Rams are looking to avoid putting all their eggs in the Chud basket. According to Rams beat writer Jim Thomas, the Rams will bring in Nathaniel Hackett for a second interview. Hackett last served as offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills in 2013 and 2014.

There was chatter shortly after Tomsula was hired that indicated Chudzinski was on the 49ers radar. The Rams were added into the mix after that, and this follow-up with Hackett could be a sign they are ready to consider other options. They could still end up with Chud, but since he cannot interview until tomorrow at the earliest, they might as well figure out if Hackett is a viable alternative.

For now, the 49ers and Rams are the only teams without an offensive coordinator. Chudzinski has likely been speaking with the Colts over the last week to figure out if there is any future with them. But with tomorrow's opening looming, it would seem nothing has yet come to fruition.

Who knew the search for an offensive coordinator would provide so much detail?! OK, we could probably ignore some of this, but what would be the fun in that?
