The San Francisco 49ers lost out on Rob Chudzinski for offensive coordinator, but they might be adding another offensive assistant in a yet-to-be-defined role. According to Matt Maiocco, the 49ers will be hiring Steve Logan to join Jim Tomsula's staff.
Logan worked with Tomsula in NFL Europe. When Tomsula was head coach of the Rhein Fire, he promoted Logan to be his offensive coordinator. Logan had extensive college coaching experience dating back to 1980. After three seasons with Rhein, Logan was Boston College OC in 2007 and 2008, and running backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009 to 2011. It sounds like he has been out of coaching since then, and most recently was working for a North Carolina radio station.
The 49ers currently do not have an offensive coordinator or a quarterbacks coach. Logan has extensive experience in a variety of roles. It's a little odd that the 49ers would go after a guy who has been out of coaching for three years, but he does have experience. We don't know what kind of role he will have yet, and it is entirely possible he could end up as simple a "senior offensive assistant", like Eric Mangini was in 2013. We'll have to keep an eye out for what might come of this.
